What is Calisthenics?
The word "calistenics" comes from the combination of the Greek words kallos - "beauty" and sthenos - "power".
Calisthenics is a training system of exercises, which is based on using the body's weight. This sport helps building a beautifully and harmoniously developed body, while increases strength and aerobic endurance.
Calisthenics sports practitioners do not use free weights and machines, but work with their own body weight using horizontal levers, parallel bars, Swedish walls and sports platforms that are easily found even on the street. Therefore calisthenics is also called street workout / fitness.
Calisthenics trains the whole body!
Exercises with the weight of your own body cannot be done in isolation - even if you lift yourself completely on your hands, the rest of the body is also in tense. An example could be doing complex movements such as one-handed gestures, as well as exercises like a plank.
Traditional weight training is based on the isolation of different muscles, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The truth is that in everyday life we do not use our muscles individually, and in order to be prepared for our daily tasks, we need to train functionally.
The main advantage of calisthenics over weight training is that the exercises engage the entire musculature of the body in synchronization. A good workout with your own weight is able to exhaust you even more than the heaviest fitness workout, since all muscle groups are involved in the exercise.
Calisthenics contribute to the perfect balance of muscle and fat! Unlike full strength training, calisthenics lovers assume that they are with low fat percentage and look not pumped - they are all toned, with well-defined muscles and a harmoniously developed body.
